Bringing Death to life for #AgathaAllAlong 💀🌘
It was an honor to illustrate for the great Costume Designer Daniel Selon to help bring Lady Death’s costume to the screen for Agatha All Along. Marvel Studios and Disney+
Along with the illustration, I also sculpted Death’s Crown, which was 3D printed by the team at the Marvel props department, and brought to life by an otherworldly brilliant performance by Aubrey Plaza
Daniel Selon always had vivid and narrative descriptions for each design, and was one of the most energetic and engaged Costume Designers I’ve ever worked with. He was constantly sending me new fabric samples to try while sketching, sharing imaginative material ideas from sculpted leathers to moss-sewn fabrics, and even posing for me as reference~
He described Death’s costume as all the cycles of life within a single outfit; death and decay, growth and rebirth, all on display as she peers at you, as if from within the hollow of a dead tree, from beneath her blackened hood.
Marvel’s Costume Department is beyond incredible, truly one of the most talented group of people I have ever had the honor to work with.
A huge shoutout to my fellow illustrators on the show, Greg Hopwood and Imogene Chayes, who painted some of the most beautiful costumes I’ve ever seen.
And to Marvel’s internal visual development team- the foundation they set for the Death design paved the way for the Costume Department. The silhouette of the cloak seen in the illustration I believe was originally painted by Naomi Baker, as well as a lot of the tone, mood, and ideas for translating the original comic book design.
And to all the rest of the crew who brought such tremendous artistry to create these costumes, it was an honor working with you 🙏🏻
