We sketched a ton of different animal masks for the Salem 7, but designed Vertigo first, as the leader of The 7, and also as the one who we felt could best set the tone for the rest. She was particularly challenging, because of her inspiration as a Cicada, we tried many different types of shapes within the mask, lacing of the costume, and the jeweled insect-woven dress, to give her the right look and feel.

Each design was inspired by the distinct essence of their respective animals, drawing deeply from the facial shapes of each animal, to craft something primal and haunting. We envisioned masks that felt like ancient artifacts—constructed from bound sticks, waxed threads, and sinew, as though forged by hand to both conceal and imprison. These cage-like structures were more than masks; they were symbolic traps, binding the witches within their own forms, their animalistic traits straining against the costume’s twisted, claustrophobic beauty.

Shoutout to our incredible PA @moonflower93 who also helped us act out the pose for this illustration.

And to the awesome Assistant Costume Designers @christinecasaus and @maddi_carroll who sampled all kinds of amazing exotic fabrics and materials that I could paint with while illustrating the masks.
